Cold stamping – gold and silver finishes in labels printing
What is cold stamping?
This term is used to describe a popular method of print processing. For its application you need a film and an additional adhesive. It makes it easy to remember what cold stamping is, and most importantly, what distinguishes it from the hot stamping method. The foil looks identical in both solutions, but the coldstamping option uses a printed adhesive. Offset machines used in this process must have special equipment attached. With flexography (flexo printing), a relief printing technique using flexible forms and liquid fast-drying inks, UV lamps will be necessary.
During the process, you can improve the aesthetics of specific areas on the label - the lettering or a particular graphic element. It is enough to mark out these areas, and in subsequent stages apply adhesive to them. For this, we use the offset technique (flat printing) or the above-mentioned flexographic technique (relief printing). We apply it precisely to these areas, and then press the printed adhesive onto the adhesive layer of the film with a special stamping plunger. The next step in cold stamping is to detach the colorant from the carrier layer.

Where does the cold stamping technique work?
This type of solution is used primarily for print finishing. By using it, a given product can also be marked and protected. This applies especially to holographic films. Cold stamping technique successfully protects labels from various types of damage (including scratches), and also has a decorative function. It passes the test on the packaging of cosmetic and food products, and it is on them that it is most often applied. If the customer is looking for an option to beautify a non-standard substrate, hot stamping may be a better solution.
With cold stamping, so-called gold plating and silver plating can be done. With the help of flexographic or offset technique, the effect of gold-plated or silver-plated lettering is obtained, which provides a great visual effect. The refined printing area can be either matte or glossy. In this way, you can add elegance to the packaging of a cosmetic or the label of a bottle of branded wine.

The main advantages of cold stamping are the possibility of obtaining satisfactory results at favourable rates. Producers can easily influence the design of their assortment, and thus get an advantage over their competitors. It is enough to use this technique to distinguish the products on offer and make them eye-catching to potential customers during shopping. An additional advantage is durability. The label will not lose its colors or blur the print on it when it stands in a shower cabin or refrigerator.
